Services for Consumers
To be eligible for employment services through Island Employment Services, one must meet the following requirements:
The individual must be eligible for Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission (MRC) services (referral information may be provided by staff of Island Employment Services) and have a disability that interferes with obtaining or retaining employment.
Once eligibility is determined, pre-employment services may be provided, including:
Support in understanding the impact of employment on Social Security and Disability payments; Vocational Evaluation; Individualized employment planning; Skills Assessment; Abilities Assessment; and a customized Employment Plan which includes options based on the consumer’s strengths, needs, abilities, and preferences.
When the pre-employment services are completed, job development activities may begin:
These activities often include: a Custom search based on strengths, needs, abilities, and preferences developed in collaboration with the consumer; Interview assistance and Application assistance. The counselors will assist the consumer with managing the job search process, including communication with the prospective employer and following up on applications and interviews.
Once employment is obtained, the following employment transition services begin, including:
Customized job support; on-the-job training; a plan for graduated expectations; off-site employment-related counseling; assistance with communication skills; and a long-term employment plan.
External Supports are also provided throughout the process, including:
Assistance in arranging transportation; assistance in obtaining counseling services as necessary; assistance with health insurance and other benefit issues; and support in reporting work activity to Social Security and other agencies.
